Kevin, you asked for it!
Saturday before Rangi, Jenny, Erin and I met at the Surf Club in Mairangi Bay for a swim around the buoys. Yes, even I couldn't resist the allure of dipping without wetsuit in the mirror calm waters off our northern beaches.
We met up with another 8 o'clock group who swim there every Saturday all year round, training midweek at the Millenium. Very welcoming they were too.
Since we didn't want Jenny to tire before Rangi, Erin and I were kind enough to dog paddle and chat for a good portion of the swim, resorting to freestyle when in danger of being shown up by resident 8 o'clockers.
Having ensured Jenny received the right amount of pre-race warmup at a suitable pace we retired to the showers and a local cafe discussing the merits of 8 o'clock swimming at a different set of buoys, which we all agreed were many. Apart from the variation in views the attraction of Mairangi Bay Farmers Market and local bread shop were distinct advantages. As was the warm and welcoming service at local cafe.
