Five Bridges Swim

A great day and a great turn out of "toilet blockers" for the 6 km swim down the Waikato River. The rive was particularly low so times were slower, but before we started we declared the swim an "event" so times didn't really matter.

Usually the swim has well under 100 entrants but today for some reason the entries reached 178. Last year was the 70th anniversary and they had a record 102 swimmers so why today was so popular is anyone's guess. It did make the first bit of the swim a bit crowded as all the swimmers kept to a rather narrow channel to catch the current.

And of course a great picnic on the river bank afterwards......

  1. Hi guys, my eyes were burning directly after the swim. I could not see anything for the rest of the day and had to go a hospital. Did anybody have the same experience? -Frank

  2. No problems with me and my eyes, did you rinse your goggles with washing liquid to stop fogging up before the swim?
We all wondered where you'd gotten too after the swim? Recovered??

  3. Shoot I missed the afterparty .... My goggles were well prepared, but after 3/4 of the swim I had to refit them because some water got in (hmm). I've read many stories on how polluted the Waikato river is, unbelievable. I'm recovering well and having antibiotics now. Cheers, hope to be there with KotB! -Frank
