The BIG One - 10k Devo to Milford

Its on in less than two weeks.   A chance to gain serious bragging rights, impress your friends and sneer at your inactive work colleagues... 'I swam 10 kilometres on Saturday, what did you do?'

When  Saturday 13 February
Meet   Milford Beach by the Toilet Block
Time    7.30am for car shuffle to Devonport & 8am swim start
High Tide at 8:00am
Expect to take 3 to 3.5 hours for swim
Bring drink bottle and gel for the adventure, possibly jandals for kayak if finishing the distance is doubtful.

I can't organise enough kayaks for all those who are expected to participate.
We have a kayak for the front group (Peter, Kevin, Cathy, Helen, Anna, Keith) and one for Jenny and Irene (friend of Anna).  Other swimmers will need to organise their own support vessel.

Lunch afterwards at Massimo.
RSVP to Anna 021 488 400 or by email.

  1. We heard yesterday that Irene (friend of Anna) had a bicycle crash, and although she may still wish to swim - it is unlikely that she will be able to do so. That would leave me allocated to a single swimmer - namely Jenny.

If this swim unfolds anything like the Long Bay to Mairangi Bay swim, there is likely to be a larger group following up the rear (Karen, Jo, Richard).

To me, it would make more sense for me to kayak with the tail-end group than to kayak with Jenny-alone.

I think we need to encourage Jenny to swim faster (ha ha - gonna cop it for saying that!) or more slowly, so as to stay with a group - any group.

I was quite worried in the last long swim that Jenny was swimming alone and on several occasions power-boats came quite close to her and there was no way that I could 'defend' her as well as the trailing group.

Let's talk about it tomorrow morning after the Saturday-swim and come up with a plan that doesnt leave anyone hung out to dry for kayak support!

  2. PS.. If there are still 3 distinct groups for some reason, then exploring the options for more sit-on-top kayaks - is the other option obviously.
